Beginning J2150

Some background information on me: I am from a small town in Missouri called Cameron and I am on the track and field team at Mizzou.  My life mostly revolves around practicing high jump (my track event) and studying.  I think this semester will be very interesting for me as far as juggling travel to meets while staying on top of the various projects and interviews I’ll have for this class.

I am not particularly technologically savvy and I think this class could be a very important step for me as far as getting there or at least grasping the basics.  The world of media and almost every other industry would not have been able to evolve without constantly developing technology.  If I want to get any job in marketing or public relations out of college I think being able to work with video cameras, audio recorders, and different types of software will be essential.

Specifically I am looking forward to doing some work with photography in this class.  I really appreciate what some photojournalists can do with just a photo and how strongly a message a photo can deliver.  Recently I came upon some photos from the website Theweek.com (http://theweek.com/article/slide/238978/the-weeks-best-photojournalism#). It was just a collection of some of the best photos taken in the past week and I think some of them conveyed really powerful and interesting messages. I liked the picture of the train that crashed through a building in Sweden, mostly because it’s just a strange and leaves the reader wanting more details.  I also liked the picture at Rossio Square in Lisbon because of the patterns, colors, and positioning of the subjects. I think photos are an paramount to luring readers into a story and it’s cliche but pictures really can say 1000 words.
